Psychologists Sans Frontières: Bringing Mental Health Care to People Who Need It
During wars or following natural disasters, the proportion of people suffering from depression or anxiety—both normal reactions to traumatic events—often doubles or triples. In extreme situations, the whole population experiences increased anxiety or sadness. Most people get through it alone or with the help of friends and family. But for others, psychological or psychiatric care is necessary.
Psychologists are an integral part of our teams, and play a vital role in patient recovery. In 2011, MSF psychologists carried out almost 17,000 individual mental health consultations and 19,2000 group counseling sessions. Learn more about how and why we’re providing mental health care in projects around the world.

Self-Reblog: Eww, Don’t Taste the Rainbow.
cranquis:

I hate the misconception that “the color of your nasal discharge can magically tell you whether or not you have a bacterial sinus infection.”
My day is filled with this never-ending courtroom drama: The Defendant, Bacteria. The Plaintiff, Whiny Patient who has been sick for perhaps 2 days with a runny nose and a headache. Attorney for the Defense: Dr. Cranquis (dressed like Perry Mason).
Cranquis: …and so, Your Honor, given the sudden onset of negligible symptoms of short duration, the Plaintiff’s admitted lack of any non-antibiotic interventions, the fact that everyone else in the Plaintiff’s social circle has been ill with the same symptoms lately, and most importantly, the scientific evidence that most sinus infections are viral within the first 10 days of symptoms, I move that this entire case against my client, Mr. Bacteria, be dismissed.
Plaintiff: OBJECTION YOUR HONOR THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A BACTERIAL INFECTION AFTER ALL MY NASAL MUCUS IS GREEN DO YOU WANT TO SEE I BROUGHT IN MY KLEENEX FROM LAST NIGHT I KNOW MY BODY IF I DON’T GET AN ANTIBIOTIC I’LL BE SICK FOR A WEEK THIS IS RIDICULOUS EVERY DOCTOR I’VE EVER SEEN HAS GIVEN ME AN ANTIBIOTIC WHEN I GET A GREEN RUNNY NOSE AND NO I DON’T WANT TO TRY USING SINUS RINSES AND NASAL DECONGESTANT SPRAYS EVEN IF THEY ARE PROVEN TO PROVIDE QUICKER RELIEF EVEN IN THE PRESENCE OF A BACTERIAL INFECTION THAN ANTIBIOTICS ALONE I KNOW WHAT’S GOING ON HERE NOW MAKE THE DOCTOR GIVE ME SOME ANTIBIOTICS TO NIP THIS IN THE BUD!
Cranquis: Your Honor, I concur with the Plaintiff. Obviously my medical license is a fraud, I got my medical schooling by correspondence, my years of medical experience have actually been acquired by playing the game Operation against Tourette’s patients (and LOSING). Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got to step out for a cigarette, because it fights off sinus infections by killing off the bacteria in my nose.*
*Actual claim from a schizophrenic patient I had in residency.

Painting Tears
Bambi losing his mother must be one of the most memorable movie moments, sending tears streaming down the face of many a viewer. Carried within these salty droplets is the anti-bacterial enzyme lysozyme. It’s also found in our saliva and in the secretions that line our stomach and nasal passages. In 1965 David C. Phillips uncovered the structure of this protein (pictured), and in doing so discovered how it manages to kill certain bacteria. The task of illustrating this enzyme’s complexity, before the days of advanced computer programmes, was left to scientific artist Irving Geis, born this day in 1908. After six months of labour, Geis produced this colourful watercolour representation of lysozyme, published in 1966 in popular science journal, Scientific American.

Gue masuk Fakultas Kedokteran, Andri masuk Fakultas Hukum, Josh masuk Fakultas Ekonomi, Darwin masuk Fakultas Kehutanan. Walau kita sekarang mencar di kota perantauan masing-masing seperti Bandung, Bogor, Depok, dan Solo, tapi Pandareds tetep jalan.
